Jean Tucker-Mann Recognized for Lifetime Achievement in Social Work

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is pleased to name Jean Tucker-Mann, ACSW, LCSW, recipient of the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award in Social Work. She is recognized for her longstanding commitment to medical social work and community building in Maryland.

Tucker-Mann has specialized in personal and relationship counseling, and in palliative care support counseling for caregivers coping with end-of-life issues; she also specializes in bereavement counseling.

Before her official retirement in 2005, Tucker-Mann held the position of Administrator/Director of the Department of Social Work for the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) for ten years. During this time, she instituted an innovative, hospital-wide palliative care program. Upon her retirement from the hospital, UMMC President and CEO, Jeffrey A. Rivest, established the "One Person Can Make a Difference Award - The Jean Tucker-Mann Diversity Award," to honor her legacy of service.

Prior to her work with the University of Maryland Medical Center, Tucker-Mann also held positions in the private, nonprofit sector, including the position of director of human resources with Baltimore's Community Building in Partnership, Inc., a unique partnership between Baltimore City, the Enterprise Foundation, and James W. Rouse, the pioneering urban planner, real estate developer and philanthropist. This special community initiative was the first neighborhood revitalization program of its kind in the nation.

Tucker-Mann held posts with the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) in Washington, DC, where her primary focus was adolescent teen pregnancy and parenting. Her work would later grow to encompass cultural diversity issues. She also served Baltimore and the State of Maryland in several capacities. During the administration of then-Mayor William Donald Schaefer, Tucker-Mann served as Executive Aide to the Mayor and as Deputy Director of Human Development for Baltimore City. At the conclusion of her tenure with the Schaefer administration, Tucker-Mann was named Executive Aide to Governor Harry Hughes, serving as the Governor's liaison to the Maryland State Department of Human Resources.

"Few people have contributed to so many people in so many different practice areas during a lifetime," says NASW President James J. Kelly, PhD, ACSW.  "Jean Tucker-Mann has proven to be a tireless champion in the advancement of social work services in the State of Maryland."
